Humiliation Day? How humiliating

Today is Humiliation Day, Fruitcake Toss Day and Festival of Sleep Day.
Really? Days like these are making me rethink the idea of marking every holiday or Hallmark marketing effort of 2012.
I celebrated “Run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it” day yesterday by hanging our “Peace” flag on the front porch. I posted said effort on Facebook with this update: “Today is ‘Run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it’ day. So this is what I came up with. Anyone want to salute it?” I got nine “likes” and seven comments, including this gem from Mike Knoop in San Antonio: “I would salute but I’m a pacifist.”
But is this really a meaningful way to “embrace holidays”? I don’t have a fruitcake to toss, I can’t sleep all day because I have to work and I’m not going to humiliate anyone today, at least not intentionally.
So for today, I am going to embrace the beautiful sunrise this morning in Denver.
